Is the shag haircut the trend of 2020?
Haircut trends can change as quickly as an Instagram story ends these days. Last year we saw a resurgence in the smart, blunt and minimalist bob. This was in contrast to the year before when the look of the moment was mermaid hair, hanging long in salty waves. This year it’s the Shag haircut that is already looking like the forerunner for the look of the year. So what does that entail for your tresses in 2020?
Haven’t we seen this before?
In short, yes. This isn’t the first time that The Shag has been gracing all of the trendiest heads in fashion and celebrity. This look first made an impact in the late 1990s and early 2000s and was a part of the grunge style that dominated so many of the catwalks at the time. It’s now making a comeback thanks to some ahead-of-the-trend celebrities, such as Alexa Chung and Suki Waterhouse who have been seen sporting – and promoting – The Shag and its many benefits as an easy to care for ‘do.
What exactly is The Shag?
It’s a messy, chaotic and wonderfully wild style that is also fairly low key when it comes to maintenance. The basis of The Shag is lots and lots of choppy layers cut into the hair to give it texture and to create body. If you’re going for this look in a professional salon then you can expect the ends of your hair to be sliced to create even more of a statement aesthetic. The Shag is definitely an attention seeking style and not one that tends to blend in. It’s in complete contrast to last year’s bob and has a lot more movement through it than many of the poker straight styles that we often see on celebrities today.
Is it bad for your hair?
No. There are plenty of ways to ensure that you take care of your hair even when it has this much texture and all those layers running through it. Strengthening treatments can help to ensure that your hair doesn’t suffer as a result of being chopped about and giving up the straighteners for a while can only help to improve overall hair health. Just bear in mind that The Shag is full of layers and the shortest of these will take the longest to grow out.
How do you style it?
The easiest way to do this is simply to flip your head upside down and dry your hair – and then flip your hair back when you’re finished. You can opt for texturising products but there is very little effort involved in finishing The Shag. It also has the advantage of being named one of the few hairstyles that actually suits everyone, no matter what your face shape.
An easy to wear style – and one that even suits every face – The Shag is set to make a big comeback in 2020 as the haircut that everyone wants to have.
