Manicures are one of the most popular treatments offered in salons. Here’s a five-step process for how to achieve salon quality results!
5 Steps to the Perfect Manicure
Step 1 – PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
In the beauty industry, hygiene and safety are the priority. Therapists must use PPE such as gloves, and when necessary, face masks – especially when working with acrylics, gels or Russian manicures. Maintaining a clean and sterile environment is crucial, so be sure to use sanitising sprays and wipes before beginning any treatment.
Step 2 – Consult the Client
Before starting, always ask your client what they’re wanting. Discuss nail shape, length and colour preferences. Be honest and realistic – certain designs aren’t always achievable on shorter nails, so managing expectations is key to client satisfaction.
Step 3 – Prep the Nails
Proper nail preparation ensures the polish is fixed and long-lasting. Start by trimming and shaping the ails, then gently push back and trim the cuticles. Next, dehydrate the nails to remove any oils that could interfere with polish bonding.
If you’re using gel polish, this is the point where the base coat should be cured under a UV lamp for around 30 seconds. This step activates a chemical reaction that helps the polish bond to the nail – sometimes causing it to feel hot.
Step 4 – Apply the Colour
Now it’s time to apply the chosen colour. Most manicures require two coats, each cured for 30 to 60 seconds (depending on your lamp). Follow this with a top coat, curing it slightly longer to ensure all layers are properly set. Be careful not to over-cure, which can lead to cracking or peeling.
Step 5 – Finish with Care
Complete your manicure by massaging cuticle oil into the nailbed. This restores hydration to the cuticles after the dehydrating process and leaves the hands looking nourished and polished.
