What is a Make-up Artist?
A make-up artist is a professional who uses cosmetics to enhance or transform someone’s appearance. They work across various industries such as fashion, theatre, film, TV, retail and weddings. Styles range from natural, everyday looks to dramatic transformations or special effects looks tailored to the client’s needs.
Type of Roles in the Make-up Industry
Make-up artist can choose from a variety of exciting roles, each with its own set of skills:
- Theatrical Make-up Artist: Design make-up looks for actors in plays, musicals and ballets. These looks need to be visible under stage lighting and from a distance.

Becoming a Make-up Artist
Here at LCBT, we offer a range of courses to help you start your make-up career:
- Level 2 Diploma in Hair & Media Make-up: A one-year course for 16-18 year olds, covering hair and make-up techniques for TV, film and theatre.
- Level 2 Technical Certificate in Make-up Artistry: Aimed at 16-18 year olds, this one-year course is the complete introduction to professional make-up and styling techniques, helping students build a portfolio of different looks.
- Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects Hair & Media Make-Up: For students who have already completed a relevant Level 2 diploma, this course develops advanced skills for film, TV and theatre.
- 19+ Level 3 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up: For those aged 19 or older, this programme includes both Level 2 and Level 3 units, offering a quicker, more affordable path to enter the industry, while still teaching you all the essential skills you need for industry.
