What is a Make-up Artist?

A make-up artist is a professional who uses cosmetics to enhance or transform someone’s appearance. They work across various industries such as fashion, theatre, film, TV, retail and weddings. Styles range from natural, everyday looks to dramatic transformations or special effects looks tailored to the client’s needs.

Type of Roles in the Make-up Industry

Make-up artist can choose from a variety of exciting roles, each with its own set of skills:

  • Theatrical Make-up Artist: Design make-up looks for actors in plays, musicals and ballets. These looks need to be visible under stage lighting and from a distance.
  • Special Effects (SFX) Make-up Artist: Creates realistic effects like wounds and aging, often for film, TV and theatre.
