LCBT’s Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Theatrical and Media Make-up Techniques is designed to give you the progression knowledge of the Advanced Theatrical and Media make-up Industries. This course provides you with the progression techniques and understanding needed to help you start your career as a theatrical, editorial, media, fashion or freelance make-up artist. The modules that you study, taught by industry professionals, will provide you with the advanced skills in Theatrical media make-up ensuring you are ready for employment with one of the industry leading companies we work alongside or for your move into higher education.

You will be provided with a uniform to wear whilst you are at college and a make-up kit that you will own to support you completing your practical treatments and to be used personally.

A good level of English, successful interview and initial assessment. Potential learners need to be able to demonstrate dedication and commitment to learning and have aspirations to work and progress into the industry.

Successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification or A-level Art or BTEC in Art and Design and a minimum of 5 GCSEs including English and Maths grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C) or a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and Maths.

Level 4 entries will require a completed Level 3 Hair and Media Makeup course, produce a mood board and for internal students a positive reference from their previous tutor.

  • 2-3 months depending on the mode of study


  • Typically between 2-4 days a week which would normally include some weekend and evenings

Course designed to teach the learner advanced skills of prosthetic pieces and bald caps, with research in fashion, theatrical, special effects and media make-up as well as learning to create an present a professional design plan.

You will be taught in state of the art dedicated Make-Up rooms by our lecturers who have extensive experience in the make-up, film, TV and styling industries. You will also benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities including industry talks, and the chance to practice your skills in industry.


  • Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Research in the fashion, theatrical, special effects and media make-up industry
  • Create and present a design plan in the fashion, theatrical, special effects and media make-up industry

Students will also learn client care & communication skills, health & safety and industry knowledge.

The course will be assessed by completing unit assignments, building a portfolio of evidence, practical assessment days and exams.

You will gain a City and Guilds Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Theatrical and Media Make-up Techniques. The qualification and course will enhance your opportunities for employment in the worlds of TV, Theatre, Film and Styling or as a Freelance MUA through our Job Shop/span>

The qualification will demonstrate to an employer that you have the necessary advanced technical skills to be employed as a Senior Theatrical and Media Make-up Artist.

Potential to progress onto university to study a Level 5 diploma in Management Practices and Advanced techniques in the Hair and Beauty or Make up Sector.

Some of the career options open to you, could include: Senior theatrical and media make-up artist/ Camouflage make-up specialist/ session stylist/ Theatrical/media make-up artist/ Television and film make-up artist.
